Our Curriculum Vision 

At Westfield Primary School, our curriculum is designed to ensure every child becomes a confident, curious and capable learner. We believe that all children deserve a curriculum that is ambitious, inclusive and reflective of the diverse community we serve. Our aim is to provide rich learning experiences that build strong foundations, broaden horizons and prepare pupils for the next stage of their education. 

Our curriculum is underpinned by three core principles: 

• Equity - every child has access to high-quality learning and meaningful opportunities. 

• Excellence - high expectations for all pupils, with strong subject progression. 

• Empowerment - pupils develop the knowledge, skills and character to thrive. 

Curriculum Intent 

Our curriculum intent is shaped by: 

• A commitment to high-quality teaching that secures strong outcomes for all pupils. 

• A belief that reading is the gateway to learning, with phonics taught systematically. 

• A focus on knowledge-rich content that builds progressively across subjects. 

• A drive for inclusive practice, ensuring pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils achieve well. 

• A determination to develop pupils' character, resilience and cultural capital. 

We aim for pupils to: 

• Know more, remember more and do more. 

• Make connections within and across subjects. 

• Develop secure foundations in English and mathematics.

Curriculum Implementation 

Our curriculum is structured to ensure clarity, coherence and progression. 

Reading and Phonics 

We follow a systematic synthetic phonics programme to ensure all pupils learn to read with accuracy and fluency. Reading is prioritised across the school, with daily reading opportunities, high-quality texts and targeted support for pupils who need it. 

English 

Our English curriculum develops confident communicators who can read widely, write effectively and speak with clarity. Writing is taught through rich texts, explicit instruction and purposeful opportunities to apply skills. 

Mathematics 

We follow a mastery approach to mathematics, enabling pupils to build deep understanding of concepts, fluency in number and confidence in problem-solving. 

Foundation Subjects 

Each foundation subject has a clear progression map that outlines the knowledge, skills and vocabulary pupils will learn. Subjects are taught discretely but connected through meaningful links that strengthen understanding. 

Inclusion and SEND 

Our curriculum is adaptive and responsive. Teachers use high-quality scaffolding, targeted interventions and personalised strategies to ensure pupils with SEND access the full curriculum. 

Personal Development 

We provide a strong personal development offer through PSHE, RSE, assemblies, enrichment, trips and leadership opportunities. Pupils learn to be safe, healthy and respectful. 

Curriculum Impact 

We measure the impact of our curriculum through: 

• Pupil outcomes in reading, writing and mathematics. 

• Subject-specific knowledge and vocabulary retention. 

• Pupil engagement, confidence and independence. 

• Progress of SEND and disadvantaged pupils. 

• Monitoring of teaching, learning and assessment.
