Curriculum Implementation
Our curriculum is designed to provide all children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to succeed both now and in the future. Carefully planned and sequenced learning enables pupils to develop secure subject knowledge alongside the ability to apply that knowledge confidently across a range of contexts.
Knowledge and skills are mapped progressively across year groups and subjects to ensure clear progression and continuity throughout a child's journey at Westfield Primary School. Through high-quality teaching, purposeful learning experiences and ambitious expectations, children are supported to build upon prior learning, make meaningful connections and strengthen their understanding over time.
Reading lies at the heart of our curriculum, providing children with the language, vocabulary and comprehension skills that enable them to access learning across all subjects. We are committed to developing confident readers who are equipped to engage fully with the wider curriculum and the world around them.
Our teachers have strong subject knowledge and are supported through ongoing professional development, collaboration and instructional coaching. Curriculum leaders regularly monitor, evaluate and refine provision to ensure that learning remains relevant, challenging and effective for all pupils.
Whilst subjects are taught discretely to preserve the integrity and depth of each discipline, opportunities are carefully planned for children to make links within and across subjects. These connections help pupils to deepen their understanding, strengthen retention and recognise the relevance of their learning.
Learning is designed to be engaging, memorable and purposeful. Through effective questioning, discussion and opportunities to revisit and retrieve prior knowledge, children are encouraged to think deeply, articulate their understanding and develop lasting learning. Key concepts are revisited throughout a child's school journey, enabling them to build increasingly sophisticated knowledge and understanding.
Adaptive teaching, high expectations and effective assessment ensure that all pupils can access and succeed within the curriculum, regardless of their starting points. Assessment is used purposefully to inform teaching, identify misconceptions and provide appropriate challenge and support so that every child makes strong progress.
By combining academic rigour with enriching experiences, our curriculum enables children to develop as confident learners, responsible citizens and well-rounded individuals who are fully prepared for the next stage of their education and future lives.
