Intent - What does our Geography curriculum intend to do?

At Westfield Primary School, our geography curriculum aims to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for life. Children develop a secure knowledge of their local area, the United Kingdom, and the wider world, whilst understanding the relationships between people, places, and environments.

 

We encourage children to think critically, ask questions, and explore real-world issues through enquiry, fieldwork, map work, and the interpretation of data. By making meaningful connections between people, places, and the environment, pupils develop a sense of responsibility and respect for the world around them.

Our intent is to ensure that all children leave Westfield as knowledgeable, confident, and environmentally aware citizens who are equipped with the geographical understanding and skills needed for their future education and life in an increasingly interconnected world.

 

Implementation - How is our Geography curriculum implemented?

At Westfield, geography is taught through a carefully planned, progressive curriculum that builds knowledge, skills, and vocabulary from Reception to Year 6. Learning is sequenced to ensure that pupils revisit and build upon key concepts over time, enabling them to develop a deeper understanding of places, people, and environments.
 
Through engaging, enquiry-based lessons, pupils investigate geographical questions, explore local, national, and global issues, and develop their understanding of both human and physical geography. Map work, fieldwork, data analysis, and the use of digital technologies are embedded throughout the curriculum, allowing children to apply geographical skills in meaningful contexts. 
 
Our curriculum provides regular opportunities for children to study their local area and compare it with contrasting regions within the UK and across the world. High-quality texts, images, maps, and first-hand experiences enrich learning and help pupils make connections between geographical concepts.

 

Impact - What progress will children make?

Teachers use effective questioning, retrieval practice, discussion, and practical investigations to deepen understanding and ensure knowledge is retained. Through a cyclical approach, key geographical knowledge and skills are revisited and developed each year, enabling all pupils to make sustained progress and become confident, inquisitive geographers.

 

Pupils leave Westfield with a secure understanding of their local area, the United Kingdom, and the wider world. They are able to use geographical vocabulary confidently, interpret maps and data effectively, and explain the relationships between people, places, and environments.
