Westfield is proud to hold the Platinum School Games Mark for over 6 years, a national award that recognises a school's commitment to providing high-quality physical education, school sport and opportunities for competition within the School Games framework. This prestigious award reflects our dedication to promoting healthy, active lifestyles and ensuring that all pupils have access to a wide range of sporting experiences.

Through inclusive participation, competitive opportunities, leadership roles and extracurricular activities, we encourage every child to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Achieving the Platinum Award demonstrates Westfield’s ongoing commitment to excellence in sport and physical education, helping pupils to develop both physically and personally while fostering positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing.

Intent - What does our PE curriculum intend to do?

At Westfield, we believe that every child should develop a love of being active and experience the joy of sport and physical activity. Through our PE curriculum, we provide a broad, balanced and inclusive range of opportunities that help pupils build confidence, resilience, teamwork and physical skills. Guided by the National Curriculum and supported by our Platinum School Games Mark status, we encourage all children to challenge themselves, celebrate achievement and understand the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle.

Alongside high-quality PE lessons, pupils benefit from a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including swimming in Year 5 and an extensive extra-curricular sports programme featuring clubs such as football, tennis and judo, as well as opportunities to take part in competitions and festivals throughout the year. Our aim is for every child to leave Westfield with positive memories of sport, the confidence to be active and the skills to lead healthy lives beyond primary school.

Implementation - How is our PE curriculum implemented?

PE is delivered through a carefully planned, cyclical curriculum that enables pupils to revisit and build upon key skills throughout their primary education. This progressive approach ensures that children develop increasing confidence, competence and physical literacy across a range of sporting disciplines.

Pupils participate in two PE lessons each week, providing regular opportunities to develop fitness, coordination, teamwork and game-based skills. Lessons are delivered by class teachers and supported by experienced PE and sports specialists, ensuring high-quality teaching and coaching across the curriculum.

We teach:

  • Multi-skills (running, jumping, balancing, coordination and agility)
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Invasion games (e.g. football, hockey, netball)
  • Net and wall games (e.g. tennis, badminton, volleyball)
  • Striking and fielding games (e.g. cricket, rounders)
  • Athletics
  • Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA)
  • Circuit training and fitness
  • Yoga and wellbeing activities
